DAYTON, OH (January 24, 2013) – On Thursday, February 14, at 8 p.m. in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, Music Director Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic will present Casablanca: Full Movie with Orchestra, the sixth and final Special Event in the DPO 2012-2013 Imagine Season.

Picture this – Time: the early days of World War II. Place: Casablanca, unoccupied Africa. Rick, an American expatriate café owner, has to choose between his love for former flame Ilsa or helping her Czech resistance-leader husband escape and go back to fighting Nazis. And Nazis seem to be everywhere in Casablanca. Even the Vichy Captain of police might be one. Complications seen and unforeseen abound.

This cinematic icon is celebrating its 70th Anniversary. Casablanca won three Academy Awards – Best Director (Michael Curtiz), Best Picture (Warner Bros.), and Best Writing, Screenplay (Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein, and Howard Koch). On the film's 50th anniversary, the LA Times called Casablanca's great strength "the purity of its Golden Age Hollywoodness" and said that the film achieved a "near-perfect entertainment balance" of comedy, romance, and suspense. Roger Ebert added that it is "probably on more lists of the greatest films of all time than any other single title," because of its wider appeal. Much of that appeal is owed to its fabulous Max Steiner soundtrack which includes not only As Time Goes By, but also many other well-chosen themes.

Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Music Director Neal Gittleman will conduct the entire score to the film Casablanca as the movie is projected on a large screen above the orchestra. The film is stripped of its music soundtrack; only the actors’ dialogue and vocals remain. Neal and the DPO have a great deal of experience with synching live music of a film’s soundtrack to the film. They’ve shown the film classics Bride of Frankenstein and The Wizard of Oz (twice) the same way and to great acclaim.
If you’ve not heard the DPO or experienced seeing a film this way, come see and hear Casablanca. It just might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship and a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Tickets range from $18 to $26 and are available at Ticket Center Stage (937) 228-3630 or online at Senior, teacher and student discounts available at box office.

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance
The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence.  Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio's cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents.   The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is also the proud recipient of a 12-13 season grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
