DAYTON, OH (Dec. 5, 2013) – On Tuesday, December 31 at 8 p.m. in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance will present New Year’s Eve Around the World. This second Signature Event in the 2013-14 Signature Season combines the talents of all three members of the DPAA – dancers from the Dayton Ballet, a vocalist from the Dayton Opera and the musicians of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.

Under the direction of DPO Music Director Neal Gittleman, this festive program will delve into the music of different cultures and countries around the world including Africa, Bohemia, England, France, Russia, and Austria, with Johann Strauss II’s On the Beautiful Blue Danube waltz at the core of this musical program.

The New Year’s Eve tradition of Concertmaster Jessica Hung playing a signature violin piece continues with her performance of Camille Saint-Saëns Havanaise. DPO violinist Dona Nouné-Wiedmann performs John Williams’ arrangement of Carlos Gardel’s Tango (Por Una Cabeza). Opera bass-baritone Michael Sumuel (he gave a remarkable performance as the title character in last season's The Marriage of Figaro) takes the spotlight for a handful of popular songs and arias including Some Enchanted Evening and Rachmaninoff’s Cavatina. Four dancers from Dayton Ballet – Case Bodamer, Brian Grant, Marcia Hetrick and Halliet Slack -- perform choreography by Paul Gilliam to Strauss’ polka Bitte Schön.

The evening also offers pre-concert food-by-the-bites and champagne for sale in the Wintergarden, complimentary champagne at intermission for ticketholders and a balloon drop. The 8 to 10 p.m. time slot sets the tone for whatever else you might want (or not) to do that night before the ball drops.
Dayton Marriott, the official hotel for the DPO, is offering a New Year’s Eve package including overnight accommodations, two tickets to New Year’s Eve Around the World, transportation to and from the Schuster Center and a breakfast buffet for two on New Year’s Day starting at $179. For reservations, call (937) 223-1000.

Tickets for New Year’s Eve Around the World range from $8 to $65 and are available at Ticket Center Stage (937) 228-3630 and at Senior, teacher and student discounts are available at box office.

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance

The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence.  Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio's cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents.  The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is proud to be one of five performing arts organizations in the country selected to receive a three-year "Music Alive" grant from New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras.
