DAYTON, OH (January 6, 2014) – On Thursday, January 9 and Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 8 pm in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, Artistic Director Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic will present The Art of Transformation concert as scheduled, but with a completely new repertoire, focusing on British Composer Edward Elgar and his Enigma Variations. The Classical Connections Concert on Friday, January 10 at 8 pm in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center will focus on Edward Elgar as well, featuring three of his magnificent compositions.

For the Classical concerts entitled The Art of Transformation (Thursday, January 9 and Saturday, January 11), the new repertoire consists of Henry Purcell’s Music for Abdelazer, or the Moor's Revenge; Ludwig von Beethoven’s  Symphony No. 1; and Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations*.

The theme of transformation is a reference to fact that Purcell was the last great British composer before Elgar composed his Enigma Variations. One of Elgar’s motivations in composing Variations was to restore the United Kingdom to its former position on the composing map, and Beethoven was Elgar's favorite composer.

For the Friday, January 10 Classical Connections concert, the revised repertoire consists of an all-Elgar program starting with Pomp & Circumstance March #4. In the unique Connections format of first-half description and explanation and second-half performance, DPO Artistic Director Neal Gittleman will then analyze each movement of Variations. Pomp & Circumstance March #1 follows and, after intermission, performance of the entire score of Enigma Variations Performance.

Classical Single Tickets: $9 | $12 | $19 | $28 | $35 | $39

Connections Single Tickets: $9 | $12 | $23 | $36 | $47 | $59

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance

The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence.  Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio's cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents.  The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is proud to be one of five performing arts organizations in the country selected to receive a three-year "Music Alive" grant from New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras.
