DAYTON, OH (January 11, 2017) – On Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 8 p.m. in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman, will present Soulful with Gavin Hope, featuring rock ensemble Jeans 'n Classics – the third concert in the 2016–2017 Dayton Freight Rockin’ Orchestra Series.  The Dayton Philharmonic welcomes to the stage guest vocalist Gavin Hope, the Wright State University A Capella Ensemble ETHOS, and the three winners of the recent Dayton Soul Singer Search:  Tiffany Bryant, Yolanda Drake, and Frances Wright Pate. Media Sponsor for Soulful with Gavin Hope is 92.1 WROU, and Media Partners are, Dayton City Paper, and WYSO.

Jeans 'n Classics returns to the Schuster Center with the exceptional voice of Gavin Hope at its forefront, emanating all the soul that Dayton can handle in one night. Covering 50 years of music—from R&B to Motown, from funk to disco to contemporary pop—this show celebrates the work of 20 of the finest African American recording artists. Artists including Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Seal, Smokey Robinson, Pharrell Williams, and Outkast have produced songs that have lasted through the years and will light up this incredible evening.  Jeans 'n Classics band members, including founder and guitarist Peter Brennan, bassist Mitch Tyler, keyboardist Don Paulton and drummer Jeff Christmas, provide the smooth and sophisticated music with syncopated rhythms, while background vocalists Rique Franks, Kathryn Rose, and Stephanie Martin add the unforgettable melodies and stylistic sounds to the music that stirs the soul.

Joining the DPO and Jeans ’n Classics on stage for this exciting evening will be three local vocalists: Tiffany Bryant, Yolanda Drake, and Frances Wright Pate. All three were winners of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance’s Dayton Soul Singer Search, held last November. Ten semifinalists were chosen from over 54 online video entries featuring each vocalist’s range and talent. The ten selected semifinalists were invited to sing live on November 12, 2016 at Dayton Beer Company in downtown Dayton in front of a panel of judges, including Peter Brennan of Jeans 'n Classics; DPO Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman; United States Air Force Technical Sergeant Retired and lead vocalist of Moment's Notice Felita La Rock; and WROU Program Director and On-Air Personality Faith Daniels.  The judges selected these three winners to sing on stage with Jeans 'n Classics and the DPO this January.

Hailing from Trotwood, Tiffany Bryant has been singing since the age of 12.  She started singing in church as a young girl, which helped form the basis for her soulful sound.  She has sung in school choirs, community choirs, and various local groups, and she has performed with several outstanding local and national celebrities.  She is currently a proud member of the well-known local band “Premium Blend.”  Originally from Middletown, Yolanda Drake has also been singing since she was a young girl. Her first live audience was her church congregation, and from that point on, she knew she was hooked on the energy and the thrill of singing in front of a crowd.  She has performed all over the Midwest and as far south as Atlanta in concerts, festivals and events, and even as a part of opening acts for a few national artists. She is currently in a local band called LYD, which stands for Live Your Dream. Frances Wright Pate is a mother of seven children and an extreme lover of music. She has honed her vocal prowess as minister of music, choir director, and lead singer for several different events and churches in the Dayton area. A few years ago, she had the privilege to be a finalist in the “Your Dream Is Out There” Gospelfest for Superbowl XLVIII.

Each of these three winners will take the role as lead vocalist on a well-known R&B smash hit – backed by the full Dayton Philharmonic and Jeans ’n Classics – on stage at the Schuster Center during the Soulful with Gavin Hope concert. All three winners are thrilled for the opportunity to sing on stage at Dayton’s world-class performing arts venue with the full sound of the DPO behind them.

Also joining the DPO for this soulful extravaganza is ETHOS, the pop a cappella ensemble at Wright State University. In only their fourth year of existence, ETHOS has already made a name for themselves in the collegiate a cappella community. They were selected for the Voices in Harmony festival showcase in February 2016 and have regularly appeared on the Kettering National A Cappella Festival showcase. They have produced a studio CD and have released a digital single of "Ring of Fire" that was selected for the prestigious national compilation album Voices Only. ETHOS regularly performs at area high schools as part of Wright State's mission to enhance vocal music education throughout the midwest. ETHOS members are Monique Cooper, Sydneigh McConnell, Rachael Watts, Jeremy Aldridge, Connor Nienhaus, Brandon Riegel, and Devlan Taylor. Brody McDonald is the ensemble’s director, and their sound technician is Joshua Hakala.

The musical line-up of the Soulful concert includes soul and R&B smash hits from the Motown Era through the 70s and 80s and even soul hits from recent artists like Outkast and Pharrell Williams.  Audiences can sit back and relax or dance in their seats, or even in the aisles, to the smooth sounds of hits like “Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough,” “1999,” “What's Goin' On,” “Back Stabbers,” “Ooh Baby Baby,” “I Got to Use My Imagination,” “Me & Mrs. Jones,” “Lady Marmalade,” “Could It Be I'm Falling in Love,” “I Wish,” “Killer,” “A House Is Not a Home,” “September,” “Ain't No Mountain High Enough, “Hey Ya,” “My Girl,” and “Happy.”
